Yankee Boy Basin is one of the iconic locations to shoot Wildflower images in Colorado. The landscapes available among these San Juan mountains are breathtaking, especially in July and August. The drive from Ouray isn't too bad. The first 6 miles are an easy dirt road. However, after that you'll likely need 4WD. I usually go about 2 more miles and pull over. In my experiences, this is where the best wildflowers are usually found. However, you can drive much further up the dirt road, but you'd need very high clearance and some experience on nasty 4WD roads.
