I had camped at the Silver Creek trailhead which leads up to Red Cloud and Sunshine Peak, However, I had hoped I'd find opportunities to photograph wildflowers in this basin near Lake City, Colorado. The road to the Silver Creek trailhead isn't to bad - just 16 miles down a dirt road. However, the 4 miles from that point to American Basin is much more taxing. After navigating a shelf road, several stream crossings, and some huge rocks and bumpy roads, i finally made it to the small dirt pull off for this site. When I arrived, the clouds were thick, but as the 30 minutes before sunset progressed, the clouds began to quickly disappear and the sun lit up what remained.
