The Narrow Gauge Railroad runs along the Animas River for 52 miles between Durango and Silverton, providing opportunities for great images of the Colorado landscape in the San Juan Mountain range. Originally built to haul silver and gold ore from Durango and the San Juan Mountains, folks soon learned and began to appreciate this beautiful area of the Rocky Mountains, and the railway started making money transporting sightseers through the rugged wilderness. These days, the train moved tourists from Durango to Silverton and back, and the 3 and a half hour ride is well worth the pricey ticket.
